The average U.S. retail cost for a gallon of regular gasoline fell 2.1 cents to $1.574 for the weekly period that ended April 21, which were still 17.0 cents per gallon higher than the comparable year-ago period, said the Energy Information Administration. The federal agency reported U.S. diesel prices slipping 1.0 cent to a $1.529 per gallon nationwide average for the same period, which is 22.5 cents higher than the same time in 2002.

Regular gasoline prices in the Midwest ticked up 0.8 cents to $1.480 per gallon for the week ended April 21 and rose 10.1 cents from the same week a year ago.

West Coast regular gasoline prices dropped 5.5 cents to $1.912 per gallon but gained 37.1 cents from the year earlier period, while California regular gasoline prices slid 6.8 cents to $2.009 per gallon for the week yet rose 39.6 cents from the same week in 2002.
