The nationwide average retail cost for a gallon of regular gasoline continued to fall, dropping 2.2 cents to $1.491 as of May 12, said the Energy Information Administration. The federal agency also reported a decline in U.S. diesel prices, which moved 4.0 cents lower to $1.444 per gallon for the same week.
Retail prices are still more expensive than a year ago, with regular gasoline averaging 10.3 cents per gallon higher than during the comparable week in 2002. Retail diesel fuel prices are 14.5 cents more than last year at the same time.
Regular gasoline prices in the Midwest bucked the trend. Prices gained 0.7 cents to $1.413 per gallon for the week ended May 12 and moved up 4.7 cents from the same week a year ago.
West Coast regular gasoline prices slipped 5.3 cents to $1.784 per gallon but gained 27.0 cents from the year earlier period, while California regular gasoline prices slid 6.1 cents to $1.867 per gallon for the week yet rose 29.6 cents from the same week in 2002.
