The nationwide average price for a gallon of retail regular gasoline ended nearly two months of successive weekly decreases from the year’s March 17 $1.73 high, ending the May 19 week 0.7 cents higher at $1.498 per gallon. The Energy Information Administration reported that U.S. diesel prices dipped 0.1 cents to $1.443 per gallon for the week.

With their report, the EIA said regular gasoline prices are 10.1 cents higher than during the same week in 2002, while diesel fuel costs retail consumers 13.4 cents more than during this time last year.

Regular gasoline prices in the Midwest gained 6.2 cents to $1.475 per gallon for the week ended May 19 and moved up 7.0 cents from the same week a year ago.

West Coast regular gasoline prices slipped 4.9 cents to $1.735 per gallon but gained 23.0 cents from the year earlier period, while California regular gasoline prices slid 5.8 cents to $1.809 per gallon for the week yet rose 25.2 cents from the same week in 2002.
