The United States consumed 563 million barrels of jet fuel in 2008, spending $72 billion in nominal dollars for the transportation fuel last year, according to data from the Energy Information Administration.
California led the nation in jet fuel consumption and expenditures for the year reviewed, consuming 100.8 million bbl of the fuel at a total cost of $12.718 billion.
The data showed Texas consumed 72.516 million bbl of jet fuel in 2008 at a cost of $9.261 billion, while the state of Florida used 38.621 million bbl and spent $4.911 billion last year.
Jet fuel consumption in New Jersey totaled approximately 35.3 million bbl in 2008, surpassing usage in New York by more than 13 million bbl.
Delaware consumed the least amount of jet fuel during 2008 at 117,000 bbl, while also spending the least on the fuel at $15.2 million. According to EIA, New Hampshire consumed 152,000 bbl of jet fuel last year at a cost of $19.9 million, followed by West Virginia at 227,000 bbl for a total cost of $29.0 million.
