Managing Terminal Profitability
Margin Strategies for Products and Operations
When I mention the topic of hedging to terminal operators, those without product ownership think they are ruled out. Not so. While attention is often given to managing the value of commodities in storage through NYMEX based futures and options, little mention is made of applying these same techniques to operating margins.
Terminals generate operating margins by the throughput and storage of product. However, market conditions may act as a disincentive for your customers to store product. During these times, inventories decline along with your margins. Knowing this relationship exists, you can develop hedging strategies to offset the loss.

Abraham Opens Summit Addressing Natural Gas Shortage
Secretary Tells NPC to “Focus on Smart Energy Use”
In opening the National Petroleum Council’s Natural Gas Summit on Thursday (6/26), Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham noted that natural gas storage is 32 percent below last year’s level and 22 percent below the previous five-year average, while demand for natural gas had increased over the last decade to levels that were difficult to sustain under current supply and production constraints.
“But this is not just about low reserves or supply and demand imbalances,” Abraham told the Summit audience. “This is about real people and real problems they confront when gas prices soar. It’s about senior citizens, living on fixed incomes, being forced to choose between skyrocketing heating bills or some other of life’s necessities.”
