Biodiesel RIN Fraud Pressuring Small Producer RIN Prices


Two biodiesel Renewable Identification Number fraud cases being investigated by the federal government are creating a 10cts spread in 2011 biodiesel RIN prices between those generated by small and large producers.

On Thursday (1/5), 2011 biodiesel RINs traded at $1.15 from small producers while at the same time trading at $1.25 for large biodiesel companies in a climate one trader described as RIN “paranoia.” Another trader said RIN validity concerns are “frustrating.”


Upgrades at Utah Plant
HollyFrontier to Boost Capacity at Woods Cross Refinery

HollyFrontier Corp. in a Jan. 4 news release announced plans to expand capacity at its 31,000 bpd Woods Cross refinery in Utah to 45,000 bpd, with an expected completion date in late 2014.

According to the release, the expansion scope includes the relocation and revamp of crude, fluid catalytic cracking, and polymerization units from a subsidiary of Western Refining Inc.'s Bloomfield, New Mexico refinery to Woods Cross, as well as an expansion of the Woods Cross diesel hydrotreater and investment in associated utilities and offsites.

60-day Clock Ticking on Decision for Keystone XL Pipeline

There’s a little more than 50 days remaining for a decision, or lack of one, regarding the approval or denial of the Keystone XL pipeline project put forward by Calgary-based TransCanada Pipeline more than three years ago.

Will President Barak Obama approve the project, with the decision he said now residing with him after he pulled it from the U.S. State Department, or will he deny it? There’s a third option, too, no decision, in which the project is green-lighted following legislation passed into law in the week leading up to Christmas.


Will energy be a feature issue in the 2012 presidential elections?
